Tribhuvan University, the oldest and the largest higher education institution in Nepal, has been serving the country producing globally competitive human resources. The Graduate School of Education (GSE) under Faculty of Education of Tribhuvan University was established to provide high-quality research-based education producing human resources to work in the field of educational research and development. The GSE offers three types of programs such as Master of Philosophy (M. Phil), M. Phil leading to PhD, and PhD program in eight subject areas, viz. Education Studies, Mathematics Education, English Education, Nepali Education, Health Education, Physical Education, Inclusive Education, and Social Study Education. These programs aim at producing the component and resourceful teacher educators and researchers who can contribute to the education and development sector nationally and globally.
The M. Phil at GSE is a 3-semester program; the first semester offers courses of general nature that build students’ foundational research knowledge and skills. The second semester offers subject specific courses that helps students expand knowledge and skills in their subject areas and research. In the third semester, the students are expected to carry out their empirical research and defend their thesis. The M. Phil. program has been offered in blended mode that consists of a two-week face to face contact sessions in the first and second semester. There will be semester-end written examination. The program runs in the evening from 5.30 PM to 8.00 PM. The completion of M. Phil degree sets the foundation for the graduates to pursue the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The PhD in Education is open to all the graduates who have completed their M.Phil. degree in education from the institutions at home and abroad.
The GSE offers eight-semester PhD program in the subject areas mentioned above. The candidates of the PhD program have to conduct PhD seminar, submit a comprehensive literature review of the research areas, and defend the proposal before permanently registration to PhD program. The candidates are guided by the principal supervisor and co-supervisor (as required) assigned by the GSE considering the expertise of the potential supervisors and the nature of the study proposed by the candidate. During the PhD program period, the candidates have to make at least three progress presentations. On completion of the field research and analysis of the data, the candidates have to sit for pre-viva, which is an internal defense of the research within the faculty. Upon incorporating the comments made during pre-viva, the candidates have to sit for the final PhD viva. The thesis will be evaluated by two examiners, one from Nepal and one from abroad.
